If I don't get a booster dose, am I still fully vaccinated?
A person is fully vaccinated two weeks after receiving all recommended doses in the primary series of their COVID-19 vaccination.
A person is up to date with their COVID-19 vaccination if they have received all recommended doses in the primary series and one booster when eligible. Getting a second booster is not necessary to be considered up to date at this time.
Once you’re fully vaccinated, you should:
Schedule or put a reminder on your calendar to get your booster dose when you become eligible: five months after receiving your second dose of the Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, or two months after receiving the Johnson & Johnson (J&J) COVID-19 vaccine. This will make you “up to date” on your COVID-19 vaccinations and offer the best possible protection. For more information, please visit our “Vaccine Booster Doses” page.
Treat your vaccination paper card like a birth certificate or other official document! Take a photo of it and then store it at home. In the future, you may need to prove you’re vaccinated against COVID-19.
Keep an official proof of vaccination with you. See examples on the Department of Health's COVID-19 Vaccine Verification page.
Add WA Verify to your smartphone.
Even if you’re fully vaccinated, you should still:
- Become “up to date” by getting your booster dose for the best possible protection.
- Respect the rules of the room. Cities, counties, businesses, events and venues may still require masks or proof of vaccination/negative test.
- Get tested if experiencing COVID-19 symptoms.
- Add WA Notify to your smartphone to alert you if you may have been exposed to COVID-19 and anonymously alert others if you test positive. WA Notify is completely private and doesn't know who you are or track where you go.
- Wear a well-fitted mask in crowded public indoor settings for the best possible protection.
- Follow CDC and health department travel recommendations.
- Take the necessary precautionary measures after a possible COVID-19 exposure:
- If you have not gotten a booster and are 5 months or more out (Moderna/Pfizer) or 2 months out (Johnson & Johnson) from completing your primary vaccine series, quarantine for 5 days following exposure followed by strict mask use for an additional 5 days.
- If you got your booster, you do not need to quarantine following an exposure, but you should wear a mask for 10 days after the exposure.
If you’re not yet up to date on your COVID-19 vaccines:
- Find a no-cost COVID-19 vaccine near you!
- Consider wearing a well-fitted mask in crowded public indoor settings.
- Get tested for COVID-19 if you’re experiencing symptoms.
- If you have been exposed to COVID-19, quarantine for 5 days followed by strict mask use for an additional 5 days. Be sure to also get tested at day 5 after exposure.
- If you travel, get tested for COVID-19 before and after traveling.
- Add WA Notify to your smartphone to alert you if you may have been exposed to COVID-19 and anonymously alert others if you test positive. WA Notify is completely private and doesn't know who you are or track where you go.
